Preparing for an Emergency

Picture
There are several good links for getting yourself, your family, and your home prepared for an emergency, whether natural or man-made.

Don't forget to make sure you have a couple of how-to books about first aid and repairing things that can help you get through an emergency. Do you have two different credit cards when traveling, so if one gets lost and canceled you are not card-less? How about a roll of quarters - believe it or not but pay phones often work when nothing else does. Why not store an extra 5-gallon can of gas in the garage? Take a look at various links for other ideas on being prepared.

Communication Tips

"...if you are unsuccessful in getting through on your wireless phone, try a messaging capability like text messaging or email. Alternatively, try a landline phone if one is available..." + others

Post-Nuclear Blast

"The message for families is simple...Stay put. Wait for instructions. If you've been outside, dust off, change, shower."

Stay "shielded from dangerous radiation until ... given the all-clear or told to evacuate. 'In all likelihood, families will be separated...It's going to be scary to sit tight, though it's the right thing to do.'"

P.S. A 10-kiloton nuclear explosion would level buildings within half a mile of ground zero, generate 900-mph winds, bathe the landscape with radiation and produce a plume of fallout that would drift for hundreds of miles.
